Don’t look at me like that!
“Don’t look at me like that!” is a phrase that is often used when someone is feeling defensive or threatened. It can be seen as a way of saying, “I don’t deserve this treatment,” or “I’m not the one you should be angry with.” It can also be used as a way of pleading with someone to stop looking at them in a certain way. Whatever the intention, the phrase is commonly used to try and stop someone from making a judgement about them.
It is not uncommon to hear someone say “don’t look at me like that!” when they are upset or angry with someone. But what does it mean?
When someone tells you “don’t look at me like that,” they are essentially saying “don’t judge me.” They may feel like you are judging them based on your facial expression or body language, even if you say nothing at all.
Oftentimes, we give off subtle cues with our expressions and posture without realizing it. And, sometimes, we may not even be aware that we are doing anything wrong. But, to the person on the receiving end of our “look,” it can be very frustrating.
If you find yourself in this situation, the best thing you can do is to try and be aware of your body language and facial expressions. If you think you may be coming across as judgmental, take a step back and re-evaluate your own reactions before responding to the person in front of you.
We all have different ways of interpreting the world around us. So, next time you find yourself in a situation where someone tells you “don’t look at me like that,” try to take a step back and see things from their perspective.
