Low sense of personal control increases people’s affinity for tighter, rules-based culture
When people feel like they have little personal control over their lives, they tend to gravitate towards tighter, more rules-based cultures. This is because these types of cultures provide a sense of structure and order that can be reassuring to people who feel like they are struggling to keep up with the chaos of the world. In a rules-based culture, there is a clear delineation of what is acceptable and what is not, which can provide a much needed sense of stability for people who feel like they are constantly teetering on the edge of disaster. While a rules-based culture can sometimes be constricting, it can also be a refuge for people who feel like they are constantly struggling to keep their heads above water.
When people feel like they have little personal control, they tend to seek out cultures with more rules and regulations. This is because strict cultures provide a sense of order and stability that can be comforting to individuals who feel uncertain about their place in the world. In contrast, cultures with fewer rules and more flexibility can feel chaotic and threatening to people who feel like they need structure and guidance in their lives. So, if you’re feeling lost and adrift, it may be helpful to seek out a culture that values tradition and certainty. But if you’re feeling confident and independent, you may prefer a culture that is more open and allows for more personal autonomy.
